Jordan Hopes Iraq's Acceptance of Inspectors Will Avert War
Jordanian King Abdullah II on Tuesday urged the United States and Britain to avoid a war against Iraq to save the region from a new conflict after Iraq agreed to the returnof UN weapons inspectors.

He made the appeal during a meeting with visiting British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, which focused on bilateral ties, the Iraq issue and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to sources close to the meeting.
During the meeting, the king expressed hope that Iraq's approvalfor the return of UN arms inspectors and the application of all relevant UN resolutions will defuse the tensions over Iraq and savethe region from a new conflict.
For his part, Straw called on Baghdad "to fully respect and apply all UN resolutions."
Straw was flown into Amman from Cairo earlier in the day as partof his region tour to rally Arab support for a tough US and Britishline against Iraq.
The two sides also discussed the situation in the Palestinian territories.
The Jordanian ruler urged the world community to help end the spiralling conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
For his part, Straw conveyed his country's support for the rightof the Palestinians to establish an independent state.
