A top aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Tuesday condemned Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for claiming that Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip would continue. saying it is an declaration of war.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh told reporters in Ramallah that Sharon's statement is an declaration of war.
Sharon said earlier that Israeli army's recent operations in the Gaza Strip, targeting militants of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), was "successful" and would continue.
Abu Rudeineh denounced that Sharon's statement to continue attacks in Gaza is a new declaration of war on the Palestinian people and the Arabs and a challenge to all UN Security Council resolutions.
He called upon the UN Security Council and the Quartet Committee, comprising the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia, to act as immediate as possible to end the continued Israeli aggression and put the responsibility on Israel for this severe escalation.
The Israeli government under Sharon is still working on undermining all the international efforts, thus threatening the interests of everyone in the region, said Abu Rudeineh.
The official called for international observers to the Palestinian territories to stop Israeli violent actions.
Gaza Strip southern area has been spot of violent escalation between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in recent days.
On Monday, the Israeli soldiers killed 15 Palestinians at Al Ammal neighborhood in Khan Younis town also in southern Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been escalating since the Palestinians began their ongoing Intifada amid raging bloody clashes with Israeli forces, which were triggered by Israeli then right-winger and now Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's provocative visit to a disputed site in East Jerusalem.
During the past two years, the conflict has so far claimed lives of 2545 people, including 1,879 Palestinians and 615 Israelis, with the balance made up of various other nationalities.
