Beijing Statistics Bureau on September 7 published a report on the city's development of software industry in 2001, saying Beijing plans to spend 10 years in developing software into a pillar industry of the capital.

The city reaped an operating income of software industry of 26.07bn yuan in the year 2001, taking up 32.8 percent of the national total and showing a rise of 37.2 percent over the 19 bn yuan of 2000. These include 7.2bn yuan registered as sales income for software products, 33.3 percent higher than previous year's 5.4bn yuan and 21.8 percent of the national total, the report said. The industry achieved an added value of 7.82bn yuan, 2.8 percent of Beijing's GDP, with its sales income 38.7 percent higher than the 18.8bn yuan reported from Shenzhen and 3.6 times of the 7.26bn yuan from Shanghai. The city boasted 1732 software enterprises, a growth of 15.0 percent compared with 1506 of the previous year.

Beijing also led the nation in its software enterprise authorization and product registration.

Besides, enterprises displayed increased input for research and development. The 622 enterprises that passed the city's yearly evaluation reportedly injected 1.86bn yuan as research funds, 16.5 percent of their total income.

The report also pointed out problems in the software industry such as small enterprise scale, lack of quality supervision system, low market share for high-grade products and low profits realized, saying only 480m yuan was left after deficits were taken off from the incomes of Beijing's enterprises in 2001.
