S. Korea, China Into Women's Basketball Semifinals

South Korea and China remained unbeaten Monday to secure semifinal berths at the Busan Asian Games women's basketball tournament.

South Korea and China remained unbeaten Monday to secure semifinal berths at the Busan Asian Games women's basketball tournament.

Home favorites South Korea, fourth placers at September's worldchampionship in Jiangsu, China, trounced Uzbekistan 123-63 for their fourth straight win at the Asiad.

The South Korean women led 27-18 after the first period and enlarged the gap to 61-34 at the half time.

South Korea currently topped the preliminary round-robin group with four wins against no defeat, followed by China (3-0), ChineseTaipei (2-1), Japan (1-2), Malaysia (0-3) and Uzbekistan (0-4).

China also secured a top four finish from the preliminaries anda place in the semifinals with Monday's 108-53 win over Malaysia.

The Chinese women, who finished runners-up to Japan at the Bangkok Asian Games four years ago, made 23 of their 65 long-rangeattempts for the win.

Lowly Malaysia were 22-21 up after the first quarter when Chinashot 4-for-14 from three-point line. However, Chinese sharp shooters dropped 11 three pointers in their 37-10 run in the second quarter to build a 58-32 lead at the half time.

Six teams are competing in the women's basketball with top fourfinishers from the preliminaries qualifying for the semifinals.

In the men's action, Japan held off Chinese Taipei 87-77 in thequarterfinal Group I, going into the 5th-6th decider as third finisher of the group.
