Chinese strongwomen continued to smash the world records when Sun Ruiping set up three more marks six times to collect her 75kg gold medal at the Busan Asian Games Monday.

"I didn't expect to break the world records," Sun told reporters. "I prevailed over others in the finals because of my strength in lifting and stability in psychology."

"But snatch is still my personal weakeness and I'd work hard onit," a shy Sun said.

At Pukyong National Gymnasium, Sun snatched a new world record of 118.5kg, after Tatyana Khromova of Kazakhstan succeeded in 118kg, which broke the previous world mark of 116kg.

Sun, starting at 110kg in the snatch, succeeded in lifting 118.5kg in her third and final attempt, adding the latest one to the ten world marks set at the Busan Asiad.

In her first jerk attempt, Sun raised 140kg, 3kg shy of the previous world record, but the two-lift total already stood as a new world mark.

Her third jerk attempt of 152.5kg eclipsed the world record of 145kg she set in the second attempt. And all of her three totals, with the highest of 271kg, surpassed the previous world mark of 257.5kg.

With an Asiad gold and world records in hands, head coach Li Shunzhu decided to ask a much heavier lift of 152.5kg for Sun's third jerk attempt to push the Asiad debutant further on a major international arena.

"We want her to step onto a higher level. It's our strategy beyond the gold," Li said, "We're aiming to expose the young-studded team to more tough international challenges to prepare for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics."

Khromova took the silver in 257.5kg and the bronze went to Kim Soon-hee of South Korea with a total of 242.5kg.

In the Asiad weightlifting competition, the Chinese strongwomen have swept all but one out of the six events. While reaping five golds and one bronze, they bettered seven world records eleven times.

Li said the Chinese team clinched their golds in "higher quality" against tougher-than-expected rivals.

Witnessing the remarkable lifters from Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and Kazakhstan, Li said the Chinese strongwomen are endeavoring to keep their leading positions and score more in the next world championships.

Sun, a freshman at the Beijing Sports University and title winner of the world stars Prix in Doha, Qatar, last March, began her weightlifting career six years ago and was recruited by the national team January this year.
