Sharon to Visit US on Palestinian Issue Ahead of Strike on Iraq

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is expected to travel to Washington on Oct. 15 at the invitation of US President George W. Bush, Israeli government sources said on Saturday.
Sharon's spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the claimed visit.
Political sources said Bush was likely to discuss with Sharon both the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and developments in Iraq.
The news of Sharon's visit came amid a flurry of activity apparently aimed at getting Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table to prevent an upsurge in violence between the two sides during a possible US attack on Iraq.
The United States complained that Israel's attacks in Palestinian territories, especially the siege of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah, had hampered America's efforts to enlist world support for action against Iraq.
