Russia Reiterates Call for Prompt Return of UN Inspectors to Iraq
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov reiterated on Saturday Moscow's call for the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq as early as possible, adding that there were no obstacles to their swift return.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov reiterated on Saturday Moscow's call for the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq as early as possible, adding that there were no obstacles to their swift return.
The minister said although there is no need for any new UN Security Council resolutions concerning Iraq, consideration of pertinent proposals is underway.
However, "the pertinent proposals should not hinder the prompt return of inspectors to Iraq. It is of principle importance," the Interfax news agency said, quoting Ivanov's words.
The chief UN inspector, Hans Blix, made it clear on Friday thathis team would not go to Iraq until agreement is reached between the UN Security Council members.
The United States and the United Nations agreed on Friday that UN arms inspectors would benefit from new instructions on Iraq. The Unites States said that it saw signs of the UN Security Council coming round to their view.
The United States, backed by its steadfast ally Britain, have been insisting that a new resolution should be drafted and passed to ensure the rights of the inspectors. They also drafted tough proposals against Iraq.
The proposals, however, face stiff opposition from other permanent members of the Security Council.
