Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanovon Friday had a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on the situation of Iraq, calling for diplomatic efforts to solve the present US-Iraq conflict.
"The Russian side, in particular, again emphasized the importance of continuing substantive consultations on this issue, taking into account, among other things, the outcomes of negotiations between UN top inspector Hans Blix and Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri in Vienna," a Russian Foreign Ministry statement said.
Moscow inched back from total opposition to a new UN resolution on Iraq Wednesday, with Ivanov saying for the first time that Russia would consider a new text laying out international demands to Baghdad.
But the foreign ministry also insisted on a rapid resumption of UN weapons inspections after the deal struck in Vienna between Iraq and the United Nations.
Ivanov also informed his US counterpart of the results of his recent talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization Mahmoud Abbas in Moscow.
Ivanov and Powell shared their views on the importance of joint efforts to promote a comprehensive settlement to the Middle East crisis, said the statement.
