A Chinese court sentenced Chen Zhengping, culprit of the notorious Sept. 14 mass food poisoning case in east China's Jiangsu Province, to death in a trial of first instance on Sept. 30.

The Intermediate People's Court of Nanjing City made the judgment on this case, which left 42 dead and many others critically ill.

The court was told that Chen, 32, was jailed for two years and six months in 1992 for the crime of theft. Chen ran a snack bar in rivalry of the Zhengwu Pastry Bar in Tangshan Township of Jiangning District of Nanjing City. He poisoned the fried dough sticks, sesame cakes and glutinous rice prepared by Zhengwu PastryBar just because he was jealous of his rival's business success.

He secretly put a large amount of powerful rat poison to the raw materials of his rival's pastry at about 11:00 p.m. on Sept. 13 and laid down more than 300 people who had breakfast there the next day. By now, 42 people have died.

After the tragedy, leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and central government ordered an all-out effort to save the victims and resolve the case at any cost. Chen was later seized by police in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, and was immediately sent to Nanjing.

The case was brought by the People's Procuratorate of Nanjing City to the court after interrogation and investigation. More than 300 people, including relatives of the victims, were present at the court hearing on Sept. 30.
