Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat described on Wednesday the US Congress decision to name Jerusalem the capital of the state of Israel "disastrous."
Arafat told reporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah after meeting several foreign diplomats that he urged US President George W. Bush to stop the decision of the Congress and not to approve it.
"It is a disastrous decision that we can't keep silent for it. Muslims and Christians can't accept it and we urge President Bush and the US administration to stop it," said Arafat.
Palestinian sources said that Arafat had contacted all diplomats who represent their countries in the Palestinian National Authority(PNA) and handed them letters to their governments.
"I invited the diplomats here and gave them official and urgent letters to their countries to work as soon as possible to implement the latest Security Council resolution 1435," said Arafat.
The Palestinian leader also condemned the Israeli army presence around his destroyed compound in Ramallah, saying that the Israeli forces are still in the area "and surround my office by tanks."
