US and British warplanes launched an airstrike against Iraqi military facility in the southern no-fly zone over Iraq after Iraqi aircraft penetrated the restricted area, US Central Command said on Wednesday.

"They placed a mobile radar south of the 33rd parallel. And they flew military aircraft into the zone," Central Command spokesman Frank Merriman said.

The 33rd parallel is the boundary for the southern no-fly zone, which was enforced by the United States and Britain following theend of the 1991 Gulf War.

Baghdad does not recognize the air exclusion zones, which are not specifically sanctioned by any UN resolution.
