The six-day joint exercise coded "Exercise Cope South-2002" between Bangladesh Armed Forces and United States Marine Corps was concluded at BAF (Bangladesh Air Force) Base Zahur in Chittagong and BAF Base Bashar in Dhaka on Sunday, an official press release announced Tuesday in Dhaka.
This exercise was planned to enhance the capabilities of BAF inairlift operation and also to strengthen interoperability between the Bangladesh Armed forces and the United States Marine Corps.
The exercise was further designed to improve interoperability between US and BAF fighter elements.
The "Exercise-Cope South-2002" was conducted as part of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operation. Transport and fighter aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force, a para commando contingent of the Bangladesh Army and a group of Bangladesh Navy personnel have participated in the exercise with the United States Marine Corps.
Two KC-130 and four F-18 fighters of the US Marine Corps and one AN-32, one C-130 and four F-7 fighters of BAF took part in this exercise.
Imagining a scenario where a large number of civil population is water logged following a cyclonic storm and tidal surge in the coastal areas and aerial supply is the only means of supporting the civil population, a number of para trooping and para dropping was conducted in the exercise. An air-to-air refueling was also conducted in Dhaka.
United States Marine Corps personnel took part in the humanitarian assistance program "Operation Sea Angel" in 1991 following a disastrous cyclone in Chittagong.
