Turkish President Ahmed Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit on Tuesday met separately with visiting Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz to exchange views on possible US military strike on Iraq, reported the Anatolian NewsAgency.
Turkish President Ahmed Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit on Tuesday met separately with visiting Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz to exchange views on possible US military strike on Iraq, reported the Anatolian News Agency.
Aziz conveyed a message to Sezer from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The contents of the message were not revealed.
Ecevit told Aziz that the Iraqi government should not give anybody an opportunity to launch an attack, the Turkish prime minister told reporters after the talks.
Aziz briefed Turkish officials on the situation in Iraq, said Ecevit. It is clear that there was not any obstacle following the recent Iraqi decisions and the UN resolutions, he asserted.
"We have congratulated them as they took a decision to open doors to the inspectors," said Ecevit, adding that "the important thing is how this would be fulfilled. We have conveyed them that the Baghdad administration should not give anybody an opportunity."
"it is obvious that the United States wants to put forward some conditions. He conveyed his views in this respect," Ecevit said.
Aziz said he "told Ecevit that Iraq would fully comply with UN Security Council resolutions," adding that "Iraq will help UN inspectors and in this way they will perform their duties and find out that Iraq does not have any weapons of mass destruction."
Aziz, who arrived in Ankara on Monday afternoon, also met with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel.
Aziz is expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday.
