The Chinese and South Korean fencers swept the top four berths of the individual events for the third time at the Busan Asian Games on Tuesday when Shen Weiwei and Li Na from China met Hyun Hee and Kim Hee-jeong in the women's epee individual semifinals.

Shen Weiwei, the silver medalist of the event at the 1998 Bangkok Asiad, will play against Hyun Hee, who clinched the title at the Lisbon World Fencing Championships in August.

"I met Hyun in the 8/16 knockout stage at the Lisbon Championships, and she edged over me 15-14 in that duel," Shen, 17,told Xinhua on Tuesday afternoon.

"Actually, all the four athletes in the semifinals are at the similar level of strength. Who will win totally depends on the performance and form in the game," the 1.8-meter Shen added.

Li Na, member of the Chinese team which took the team silver at the 1999 World Fencing Championships, said that she had met Kim Hee-jeong in 1999. "She beat me in that clash," Li added.

"Both I and Shen Weiwei did not meet any strong opponents in this morning's preliminary round, and the real tests will come in the semi-finals," she noted.

Seventeen fencers from 11 countries and regions have registered to compete in the women's epee individual competition at the Busan Asiad. The final will reel off in the evening.

Since the beginning of the 12-gold Asiad fencing competitions on Sunday, the Chinese team has claimed three titles in the men's individual foil, men's individual epee and women's individual foil respectively, while hosts South Korea grabbed the gold in the women's individual saber. Two golds are produced everyday in the six-day fencing competitions.

Besides today's women epee semifinals, the Chinese and South Koreans had occupied the semifinals in the men's and women's individual foils.
