Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday told Malaysian Defense Minister Najib Abdul Razak that the reasons behind US plans for a possible attack on Iraq are unclear, Kyodo News reported.
During their talks Monday at the premier's office, Koizumi saidthat there was an appropriate basis for the Gulf War in 1991 and last year's military attacks on Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, but that the reasons behind current plans to attack Iraq are unclear, Kyodo said.
The premier also told Najib that on his recent trip to the United States he urged US President George W. Bush to secure international agreement for any US attack on Iraq, Kyodo said.
On Sept. 16, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said the Iraqi government has accepted an unconditional return of UN weapons inspectors. Iraq, however, denies US allegations that it has weapons of mass destruction, according to Kyodo sources.
