Busan Asian Games Weightlifting Competition Reels off

Weightlifting competitions of Busan Asian Games kicked off Monday afternoon in the Pukyong National University Gymnasium, with expectations that the Chinese women would cement their dominance and men expand winning turf.

Weightlifting competitions of Busan Asian Games kicked off Monday afternoon in the Pukyong National University Gymnasium, with expectations that the Chinese women would cement their dominance and men expand winning turf.

The final of women's 48kg category Monday afternoon produces the first gold of the weightlifting competition.

Li Zhuo, already considered a promising prospect in this class,will be the 11th to attempt her snatch and clean and jerk among all of the 12 strong women.

The power sports competitions, running from September 30 to October 10 in Busan, have a total of 15 golds on offer.

The Chinese lifters eye raising more than nine gold medals overtheir shoulders in the limelight after the heated rivalries.

The nine-plus most coveted medals in the sport in Busan amount to barbell weights ranging from 48kg for women to 105kg for men.

China's women lifters swept seven golds in the last 13th Asian Games in 1998 in Bangkok, with a total of 13 world records broken for 17 times.

On men's side, the competitions are much tougher and more suspense hinges on the final successful snatches and jerks.

The Asian Games weightlifting competitions last 10 days, with medals in one or two classes coming out every day. Following is the schedule of the 15 events in the Busan Asiad:

September 30: Women's 48kg

October 1: Women's 53kg and Men's 56kg

October 2: Women's 58kg and Men's 62kg

October 3: Women's 63kg and Men's 69kg

October 4: Men's 77kg

October 6: Women's 69 kg

October 7: Women's 75kg and Men's 85kg

October 8: Women's 75-plus kg and Men's 94kg

October 9: Men's 105kg

October 10: Men's 105-plus kg
