Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations, reports reaching Kuwat City late Sunday said.
The reports did not mention the reasons behind the Saudi move, but noted that the Qatari Al-Jazeera TV channel had recently broadcast some programs deemed by Saudi Arabia as harmful to the two countries' ties.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, a tiny eastern neighbour of the kingdom, have become strained over the Doha-based satellite news channel Al-Jazeera which allegedly "aired programs deemed offensive to Saudi Arabia."
The row was ostensibly triggered by a June 25 live debate on Al-Jazeera, in which participants criticized Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah's Middle East peace initiative and accused Saudi Arabia ofhaving "betrayed the Palestinian cause."
Saudi newspapers warned Qatar in July to "reconsider its policies," warning that Al-Jazeera could become a tool serving anti-Arab interests.
