Palestinian Militant Dies in Mysterious Explosion
A Palestinian militant, member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), was killed Saturday night in a mysterious explosion in the northern West Bank town of Tulkarem, said Palestinian medical sources.

The sources said that the man, a well-known militant, was in a house and then suddenly an explosion was heard in the area, adding that his remains were brought to the hospital.
Palestinian security sources in the town said that apparently, the man was preparing a bomb, which suddenly exploded and killed him. No other injuries were reported in the area.
The Israeli army closed off the area and conducted searches.
Earlier Saturday, the residents said that dozens of Palestiniansdemonstrated in the town, which is under the Israeli army curfew, adding that the demonstrations were aimed at marking the second anniversary of the Palestinian intifada, or uprising, against Israeli occupation.
They said that Israeli soldiers opened fire at the crowd who waved Palestinian flags and pictures of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, adding that the demonstrators threw stones at the soldiers.No injuries were reported.
In the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, Israeli Apache helicopters attacked the Namsawi neighborhood, west of the town, with missiles after Palestinian militants fired three mortar shellsat a nearby Jewish settlement.
Medical sources in the town said that nine people were injured, among them women and children, adding that severe damage was causedto several houses after tanks shelled them.
Palestinian security officials said that they are expecting an Israeli army escalation of its military operations in the Gaza Strip, either by sending army divisions or attacking the Gaza Stripby F-16 warplanes and helicopters.
