French President Jacques Chirac on Friday told his United States counterpart George W. Bush that France opposes to any form of resolution that decides on automatic military action on Iraq if Iraq fails to comply with UN demands, the French presidential spokeswoman said.
France supports the adoption of a resolution "simple and firm, showing the unity and determination of the international communityin favor of a rapid return of United Nations weapons inspectors into Iraq," said presidential spokeswoman Catherine Colonna.
"The president (Chirac) also restated that France, as the majority of the international community, remains more than ever infavor of a two-step process, given the seriousness of the decisions to be taken and their consequences," she said.
In his call to Chirac, Bush explained the main ideas of the Washington-London draft resolution on automatic military action onIraq, said the spokeswoman.
The US and Britain have launched a joint diplomatic offensive to win the support of France, Russia and China - the three other permanent members of the UN Security Council -- for the draft resolution.
In the two-step process, France proposed that one resolution be adopted on the return of UN weapons inspectors and a second oneauthorizing force if Iraq failed to comply.
