A leading activist of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) was killed Friday by Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Hebron, Palestinian sources and Israel Radio reported.

Jamal Yamour, 21, from the neighborhood of Farash in the city, was killed after an special Israeli army unit surrounded his house and opened fire directly at him.

Israel Radio quoted army sources as saying Yamour was shot dead after he tried to escape from his house with a machine gun.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian national security statement said Israeli army troops destroyed early Friday the home of a member of the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) in northern Gaza Strip.

With explosives, the Israeli soldiers, supported by tanks and bulldozers, destroyed the house of Imas Issa, who carried out a suicide bombing attack inside Israel several months ago.

The statement also said the Israeli army Friday morning raided the central Gaza Strip town of Deir El Ballah, adding that the force supported by tanks and armored vehicles immediately imposed curfew on the town.

The troops, which raided houses and conducted searches for Palestinian militants, arrested at least four Palestinians from their homes and then pulled out from the town.

Three of the four detained are members of Hamas, according to Israel Radio.

Residents in the town said intensive shooting could be heard before dawn on Friday, adding that an exchange of fire erupted between Palestinian militants and Israeli soldiers. But no injurieswere reported.

The Israeli army has intensified its armed operations in the Gaza Strip over the last couple of weeks, after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced that operations in the Gaza Strip would be intensified against Hamas.

Israeli-Palestinian confrontations escalated in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip after Israel reimposed siege on Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah eight days ago.
