Bush Bills Iraq as a 'Uniquely American Issue'

Billing it as a "uniquely American issue," US President George W. Bush said on Thursday that the US will act alone if the United Nations fails to take strong action against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
"If the United Nations won't act, if he (Saddam) doesn't disarm, the United States will lead a coalition to make sure he does," Bush said at a fund-raising gathering in Houston, Texas.
"It's an American issue, a uniquely American issue," Bush said. "I say uniquely American issue because I truly believe that now that the war has changed, now that we are a battlefield, this man poses a much greater threat than anybody could image."
"Other countries, of course, bear the same risk. But there's no doubt his hatred is mainly directed at us," he continued. "After all this is the guy who tried to kill my dad."
Bush was referring to an assassination attempt in 1993 on former US president George Bush. A car bomb plot was disrupted during the senior Bush's trip to Kuwait. The US claimed the plot could be traced back to the Iraqi government.
Earlier on Thursday, Bush said at the White House in Washington that the administration and the US Congress were near an agreement over a resolution authorizing him to use force against Iraq.
