The Chinese women's judo team expects a bright prospect at the 14th Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, and sets a target of winning at least three golds, said Chinese coach Liu Yongfu Thursday.
Liu told Xinhua upon his arrival at the Gimhae International Airport that except for a few veterans, most of the women judokas in his team are novices but they have the competence and determination to perform well against tough challenges from judo powerhouses like Japan and South Korea.
He also made a mention of the team from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), saying that DPR Korean team is quite strong despite its rare appearances in major international events.
While on the men's side, he said that it will do its best to try to win one gold, which will mean an historic breakthrough for Chinese men judokas.
To achieve this goal, the Chinese team will pin their hope on two categories of 73kg and over 100-kg, Liu said.
Despite five silvers at four Asian games since the Seoul Asian Games in 1986, China has yet to grab even one gold in men's judo competitions.
China has sent six men judokas to compete in Busan's six classes, namely 60-kg, 73-kg, 81-kg, 90-kg, over 100-kg and open class weight. Pan Song, bronze medalist at the Bangkok games, and Liu Shenggang, a veteran of the Atlanta Olympics, are expected to be China's possible gold contenders.
