Bush Says He is Near Agreement with Congress on Iraq Resolution

US President George W. Bush said Thursday that he is close to reach an agreement with the Congress on a resolution authorizing the use of force against Iraq.

US President George W. Bush said Thursday that he is close to reach an agreement with the Congress on a resolution authorizing the use of force against Iraq.

"We're near an agreement soon and we will speak with one voice," Bush said at the Rose Garden of the White House, together with some US lawmakers who support a US war with Iraq.

"We are engaged in a deliberate and civil and thorough discussion. We are moving toward a strong resolution. All of us, and many others in Congress, are united in our determination to confront an urgent threat to America," Bush said.

"To ignore these threats is to encourage them, and when they're fully materialized it may be too late to protect ourselves and our friends and our allies," the US president said, adding that "Democrats and Republicans refuse to live in a future of fear."

White House officials described Bush's remarks as a response to Democratic appeal that Bush should "take security out of politics."

House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt warned earlier Thursday abitter partisan fight over the war talk on Iraq could complicate efforts to find unity on the Iraqi issue.

In the run-up to the November elections, Bush has recently accused Democrats of ignoring national security issues. Senate Democratic leader Thomas Daschle on Wednesday slashed Bush for politicizing the Iraqi issue and demanding a formal apology from Bush to the Democrats.

Bush's comment at the Rose Garden was coincided with a news conference that Democratic leaders had planned on Thursday with live TV coverage.
