According to a Taiwan-based media report, Lee Teng-hui claimed that Diaoyu Island was part of the Japanese territory when interviewed by a Japanese press days ago. As soon as it was published, Lee's traitorous remark aroused a public outcry in Taiwan, denouncing Lee's treasonable act and pointing out that Diaoyu Island is an inherent part of the Chinese territory.
The official in charge of Taiwan's "internal affairs ministry" noted his "ministry" has always advocated that Diaoyu Island belongs to China, which leaves no room for compromise.
Li Chuan-chiao, secretary of KMT group in "Legislative Yuan", indicated that history is history and cannot be obliterated, and that the Taiwanese should hold firmly to Diaoyu Island's sovereignty
Yok Mu-ming, chairman of the New Party, severely denounced Lee's betrayal. He said that in order to fight for the Island's sovereignty, numerous university students and the masses once took to the street, enthusiastically launching "the campaign to defend Diaoyu Island" at home and abroad; but, today Lee Teng-hui openly alleged that Diaoyu Island was part of the Japanese territory. Yok affirmed that his party not only opposes Lee's claim, but also censures Lee's behavior. And supporters of the New Party, he added, will indignantly condemn Lee's traitorous speech.
