A commuter train derailed after colliding with a car at a railway crossing in central Japan during the morning rush hour Thursday, killing the car's driver and injuring at least 21 people on the train, police said.
The front two cars of the eight-car commuter express train came off the tracks near Inazawa city at around 8:30 a.m., said local police spokesman Takao Goto.
The injured, including the train driver and his assistant, were taken to nearby hospitals, but their condition was not immediately known, he said, adding the cause of the accident was under investigation.
The train, operated by Meitetsu Transport Co., was carrying about 900 passengers at the time of the accident, most of whom commute to Nagoya, Japan's fourth-largest city, 170 miles west of Tokyo, Goto said. Earlier, he said 2,000 people were on the train.
