A wildfire continued to rage Wednesday in eastern Los Angeles County, southern California, forcing the evacuation of 70 homes and the closure of the Angeles National Forest.

The fire has so far torched 22,000 acres (8,910 hectares) of forest and destroyed over 40 structures since it started late Sunday in the 65,000-acre Angeles National Forest, a major recreation area for local people.

People who want to get to their recreational cabins in the forest will have to obtain a "day pass" from the U.S. Forest Service, but the procedures for obtaining a day pass have not yet set.

Nearly 2,000 firefighters have been working hard to contain thefire, assisted by water-dropping helicopters and airplanes. So farthe fire was only about 8 percent contained early Wednesday, according to U.S. Forest Service fire dispatcher Tony Heinan

Black cloud caused by the smoke of the burning forest has formed in the sky above eastern Los Angeles County, as flames werevisible from the downtown Los Angeles skyline. Residents in the eastern suburb were encouraged to wear masks to avoid inhaling thesmoke, soot, ash and the invisible particulate matter in the heavily polluted air.

The fire was the larger of two dangerous blazes in California. The other fire erupted in a Santa Clara County park west of MorganHill. Hundreds of firefighters attacked the flames on the ground while 10 planes and helicopters aided from the air.
