US and British warplanes on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on Iraq's defense facilities allegedly in the no-fly zone, US defense sources said on Wednesday.
The strike took place at around 2:15 p.m. (1800 GMT) EDT on Tuesday with the targets located near Al Amarah about 170 miles (332 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad, the sources said.
Precision-guided weapons were reportedly used in the attack which brought the total number of allied strikes against Iraqi targets this year to at least 38.
Damage assessment is still under way, officials from the United States Central Command based in Tampa, Florida, was quoted as saying.
US and British forces have stepped up air strikes against Iraqi defense and command and control facilities since the administration of President George W. Bush planned a military action to topple President Saddam Hussein at the beginning of this year.
The US military has always described the attacks as retaliation to Iraqi attempt to shoot down allied aircraft.
