Work has begun on the main body of the Zhiganglaka Hydropower Station on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the first state-listed power project exclusively funded by overseas investment.

The project has gained the approval of the State Development Planning Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC) and will cost 1.42 billion yuan (171 million US dollars), to be provided by the AES Corporation of the United States and a Hong Kong company.

Zhiganglaka Hydropower Station is the fourth of 13 power stations to be built on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the second longest river in China.

The power project has five generating units with a combined installed capacity of 190,000 kw. It is expected to generate 762 million kwh of electricity annually upon full operation in 2005.

So far the cofferdams have been joined, and work on the earthwork of the station's main body has begun.
