The CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile telecommunications network, that started official operations in China in early January, now has more than 100,000 subscribers in the country's largest city.
The number of the subscribers is growing at an average daily rate of about 1,000, according to China Unicom Shanghai Branch, a subsidiary of China Unicom, the only CDMA operator in the country.
The fast growth was reportedly attributable to high quality of the CDMA system and service development and promotion by the company.
A CDMA cell phone boasts such advantages as low radiation emissions, clear voice transmission and high security.
China Unicom has paid attention to localizing the supply system for its production equipment. Most of the suppliers for the CDMA network's first-phase project were domestic enterprises and Sino-foreign joint ventures.
In 2001, China Unicom started the second phase, which, when completed, will give the CDMA network nationwide coverage and a total capacity for 50 million subscribers, making it the largest CDMA network in the world.
