German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will fly to London later on Tuesday to discuss the Iraq iissue with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, said a German government spokesman Bela Anda.
The chancellor, who just won a second 4-year-term during Sunday's election, will exchange views with the British leader on "international issues," including the Iraqi issue on which Germany differs with the United States and Britain, said Bela Anda.
Analysts say the meeting could also be considered as the first step by Berlin to repair through London the strained German-US relations due to their conflicting views on a possible war against Iraq.
Berlin's repeated opposition to a war on Iraq and justice minister Daeubler-Gmelin's reported comparison of US President George Bush with Adolf Hitler angered the White House. Bush's security adviser Condoleezza Rice said the relations were "poisoned."
Schroeder announced on Monday that the minister would not serve in the new cabinet. He also wrote Bush a letter to apologize but got no reply. The Bush administration has not expressed congratulations to Schroeder on his re-election so far.
US government officials said on the same day that Germany has much to do to repair the chill relations with the United States.
