China to Hold WIPO Intellectual Property Summit

A senior Chinese official announced Tuesday in Geneva that the Chinese government and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will jointly hold a WIPO Intellectual Property Summit in Beijing in April 2003.

Wang Jingchuan, Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office of China, made the above announcement at the on-going 37th General Assembly of WIPO in Geneva.

Wang said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the issue of intellectual property and has made unremitting efforts for the protection of intellectual property.

China has joined a series of relevant multilateral treaties and fulfilled its international obligations, he added.

Wang assured the assembly that China, as the host country of the summit, would do its utmost in order to make this high-profile meeting a success.

Bernard Kessedjian, Chairman of the assembly, welcomed this announcement and expressed his appreciation of the Chinese government for hosting the Summit.

WIPO also issued a statement, saying that "WIPO welcomes this initiative which will demonstrate how the intellectual property system enables all countries to tap into their unique sources of intellectual capital and to reap the benefits of their creativity and innovation."

WIPO hopes that the summit will serve as a high-profile forum to emphasize the importance of intellectual property on the global agenda and highlight the need for concerted international efforts to ensure respect for intellectual property.

The summit is the first high-level meeting in the field of intellectual property. With a theme on "Intellectual Property in the Knowledge Economy", the Summit is to enhance the awareness of and respect for intellectual property worldwide, said Wang.

The WIPO Assembly, which bring together the 179 member states of the organization, are meeting in Geneva from September 23 to October 1.
