Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday urged Israel to ensure the safety of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat who has been under an Israeli siege.
During his phone talks with Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer, Mubarak underlined "the need for putting an end to allIsraeli military operations to prevent further complications," Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.
The two men also discussed the worsening situation in the Palestinian lands due to the ongoing Israeli acts there, MENA added.
The Israeli siege of Arafat's office building in his compound inthe West Bank city of Ramallah has entered the fourth day, while Israel has been under mounting pressure to end its siege of Arafat.
Earlier in the day, the Palestinian National Authority refused to transfer to Israel a list of the Palestinians who are holed up in Arafat's ruined headquarters.
The Israeli army launched offensives against Arafat's compound and made an incursion into Gaza on Thursday to avenge two earlier suicide bombing attacks in Israel, which killed eight people and injured some 60 others.
Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israelin 1979, has been playing a key mediating role in resolving the Arab-Israeli conflicts.
