The official newspaper of Iraq's ruling Arab Baath Socialist Party on Monday accused the United States of ignoring Iraq's legal rights by trying to push through a new UN Security Council resolution on its disarmament.

"The United States tries to ignore Iraq's legal rights in any new UN resolution to abort Iraq's decision which called for the return of international arms inspectors," said the Al Thawra daily, the mouthpiece of the ruling party, in its editorial.

In an official letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Sept. 16, Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri said his government is ready to accept the UN weapon inspector unconditionally.

But the United States has voiced skepticism about Iraq's true intentions and continued to seek a new UN Security Council resolution on Iraq's disarmament.

"The United States wants to use the UN Security Council to give legitimacy to its threats against Iraq, although it has announced that it's not necessary for it to have a UN mandate to attack Iraq as it always despises the United Nations and its authority," Al Thawra said.

Iraq has made it clear that it will not accept any new UN Security Council resolutions imposed on it.

"Iraq will not deal with any new UN Security Council resolutions that will impose new conditions beyond existing ones," an official spokesman said on Saturday, following a meeting of senior officials chaired by President Saddam Hussein.

US President George W. Bush has repeatedly accused Iraq of pursuing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorists by providing them with such weapons, and vowed to achieve a "regime change" in Iraq with all the tools at his disposal, including military actions.
