Siege on Arafat's Compound Could Stop Terror Attacks: Israeli FM
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said on Monday the military siege on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound could stop "terror" attacks, Israel Radio reported.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said on Monday the military siege on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound could stop "terror" attacks, Israel Radio reported.
The foreign minister said Palestinian security advisor Mohammed Dahlan has requested the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Islamic Jihad (Holy War) to stop "terror" attacks against Israel.
The request was "a direct result of the troops' operation" on Arafat's compound in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Peres was quoted as saying.
Earlier in the day, Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer allowed Arafat's top aide, Mahmoud Abbas, known as Abu Mazen, to convene Palestinian officials in Ramallah.
The officials were expected to discuss the current situation against the backdrop of the military siege of Arafat's compound, Palestinian reforms and ways to stop attacks against Israeli civilians.
