Fourth Asia-Europe Summit Opens in Copenhagen
Leaders of 10 Asian countries and the 15 member states of the European Union (EU) began their biennial summit in Copenhagen Monday to exchange views and promote cooperation in security, economics and trade, culture and poverty reduction.
Leaders of 10 Asian countries and the 15 member states of the European Union (EU) began their biennial summit in Copenhagen Monday to exchange views and promote cooperation in security, economics and trade, culture and poverty reduction.
The gathering is the climax of the Sept. 22-24 Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), an informal dialogue between Asia and Europe launched in 1996 in Bangkok, Thailand.
"This summit is the first meeting of Asian and European leaders after the Sept. 11 incident. It is of great significance for leaders to discuss how to strengthen cooperation between Asia and Europe under the new circumstances," Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in a written statement upon his arrival Sunday morning in the Danish capital.
He chaired an Asian leaders meeting later on Sunday, calling for efforts to increase political consensus, strengthen ties and expand cooperation, particularly in economics and trade, between Asia and Europe.
The Chinese premier is here also for an official visit to Denmark and the fifth China-EU summit following the ASEM summit. He arrived after a four-day official visit to Austria, the first leg of his current three-nation European tour, which will also take him to France.
