The leaders of South Africa, Australia and Nigeria was to meet in Abuja, Nigeria on Monday to discuss the Zimbabwean land crisis, a senior official said on Sunday.
South African President Thabo Mbeki, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, the Commonwealth "troika", was to review developments in Zimbabwe after its suspension from the Commonwealth at a meeting at Malborough House in London six months ago, Deputy-Minister Aziz Pahad said.
The three would be joined by Commonwealth secretary general DonMcKinnon although Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe declined Howard's invitation to attend, the South African Press Associationreported.
Pahad said the meeting was important, because the "troika" needto discuss whether Zimbabwe had adhered to stipulations in the Malborough House statement.
"The three will review the situation and decide if Zimbabwe hasadhered to the stipulations. If it has not, then the "troika" willhave to decide what steps need to be taken," he said.
According to Pahad it was unlikely that Zimbabwe would be expelled from the Commonwealth as there would not be enough consensus to do so, the report said.
An effective solution that encompassed the political, economic and land issues of Zimbabwe would therefore have to be sought by the "troika", he said.
