The city of Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong province exported 28.5 billion US dollars worth of commodities in the first eight months of this year, up 22 percent from the same period last year, latest statistics show.

Export growth is 4.2 percentage points higher than the national average, the highest growth rate of big and medium-size cities on the Chinese mainland.

Processed exports took the lion's share of the city's total to hit 23.04 billion US dollars from January to August.

Along with recovering growth in exports of the city's traditional commodities, Shenzhen also reports rapid rises in exports of high-technology commodities which have become a major force in driving up the city's exports.

Shenzhen is one of China's five special economic zones (SEZ) where preferential policies are adopted. SEZs were designed as pilots for the country's reform and opening-up policy.
