Zhu Urges Iraq to Allow UN Inspectors' Early Return
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Friday urged Iraq to earnestly abide by relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and allow UN inspectors to return to Iraq at an earliest possible date.
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Friday in Vienna urged Iraq to earnestly abide by relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and allow UN inspectors to return to Iraq at an earliest possible date.
Zhu made the remarks here during talks with Austrian Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel. They were exchanging views on international issues of common concern.
Zhu said China has always advocated that any political resolution to the Iraqi issue should be within the framework of the United Nations and based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Zhu pointed out that Iraq's sovereignty, territorial integrity and rational concerns about security should be respected, citing Iraq's recent announcement that it will unconditionally allow UN inspectors to return to Iraq, which in Zhu's words, is worthy of appreciation.
He noted that what was crucial at present was that UN inspectors should go back to Iraq as soon as possible to carry out their work and make it clear whether Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.
Without irrefutable evidence, there should be no use of force, and any major action in this regard should be based on UN authorization, stressed Zhu.
Speaking on the same occasion, Schuessel said China has important international influence, and the European Union should strengthen coordination and consultation with China on the Iraqi issue.
Zhu arrived here Thursday evening on a four-day official visit to Austria at the invitation of Austrian Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel.
