Shooting that erupted early on Thursday in the West African country of Ivory Coast is definitely an attempt to seize power in a coup d'etat, a top official said.

Shooting that erupted early on Thursday in the West African country of Cote d'Ivoire is definitely an attempt to seize power in a coup d'etat, a top official said.

"The shooting is not just in Abidjan it is also in Bouake and Korhogo," said the official, who did not want to be identified. "It is definitely a coup attempt."

Heavy gunfire erupted in Abidjan after 4 a.m., reviving memories of a 1999 coup that ruined the country's reputation for stability in a turbulent region.

Cote d'Ivoire is the world's top cocoa producer.
