Troops of South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) entered the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Thursday to start demining work, media reports in Seoul said.

About 100 South Korean troops equipped with mine-clearing equipment made their way through a gap in the border fence of the DMZ that has separated the North and South for more than half a century, the reports said.

Officials were quoted as saying troops from the North are doing the same thing.

On Wednesday, the two countries symbolically opened a gap in the frontier fence for the demining work, a vital step toward relinking rail and road links between them.
