UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan met at the UN Headquarters Wednesday with Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri, and the chief UN inspector will brief the Security Council on Thursday, a UN spokesman said.
"Hans Blix, the executive chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, will brief the members of the Security Council at 4 p.m. Thursday in closed consultations," spokesman Fred Eckhard said, citing council President Stefan Tavrov of Bulgaria.
The spokesman also confirmed that Annan "would be meeting Iraq's Foreign Minister, Naji Sabri, this afternoon," adding that the meeting is being held at the request of Sabri, who is due to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
The world body, a key player on the issue of Iraq, just go ahead with the US and Britain reluctant at quick council moving.
Diplomats said the two permanent council members could be busy preparing new resolutions on Iraq, which would likely include new instructions for weapons inspectors and a timetable for disarmament.
