Int'l Symposium on WTO, Legal Services Opens in Beijing

More than 400 Chinese and foreign delegates gathered here Wednesday for a symposium on legal services in the framework of the World Trade Organization.

More than 400 Chinese and foreign delegates gathered Wednesday in Beijing for a symposium on legal services in the framework of the World Trade Organization.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent a congratulatory letter to the symposium, co-sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Justice and All China Lawyers' Association.

In the letter, Jiang said the WTO entry was a strategic decision by the Chinese government, and a milestone in the opening-up and modernization of China.

"This will exert a positive influence on China's economic restructuring and reform, and legislation, jurisdiction and legal services," Jiang said.

The symposium will surely promote international cooperation and exchanges over legal services as well as mutual understanding and friendship, he said.

Addressing the symposium, State Councilor Luo Gan said that in accordance with the principles of unified legal system, transparency and non-discrimination, China will lose no time to establish a foreign-related economic legal system that conforms to both WTO regulations and China's national conditions.

During the three-day symposium, participants from governmental branches, international organizations, law offices and academic circles will discuss such topics as WTO and Modernization of the Legal System, Trade Services and the Legal Services Industry, WTO and Internationalization of Legal Services, WTO and Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, Improvement of the Legal Aid System as well as WTO and Training of High-Level, Foreign-Related Legal Talents.

The participants are from countries and regions including Britain, France, South Africa, Japan and Thailand.
