Ignoring Iraq's offer for an unconditional return of UN weapons inspectors, US President George W. Bush said Tuesday that the United Nations must not be fooled and must act on Iraq.

"United Nations must act. It's time for them to determine whether or not they'll be the United Nations or the League of Nations," Bush said at a gathering in Nashville, Tennessee.

"The United States will remain strong in our conviction that we must not and will not allow the world's worst leaders to hold the United States and our friends and allies blackmail or threaten us with the world's worst weapons," he said.

Meanwhile, a senior Bush administration official called on US Congress and the United Nations to keep up the pressure on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein despite Iraq's agreement to the unconditional return of UN weapons inspectors.

"Now is not the time to release any of that pressure, internationally or within the Congress," the official told reporters on condition of anonymity. "It is even more important now for the Congress and the United Nations to act."

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced on Monday that he received a letter from Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri informinghim of Baghdad's decision to allow the return of the UN weapons inspectors "without conditions."
