The United States on Tuesday welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's landmark visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and indicated it was considering whether to reopen its frozen dialogue with Pyongyang.
"We welcome and support Prime Minister Koizumi's efforts," a State Department official told reporters on condition of anonymity.
"We note that he discussed matters of particular Japanese concern but also raised security issues of broad international interest on which the US and Japan share concerns," the official said.
"We also note that Pyongyang indicated it would extend its current moratorium on the launch of long range missiles and abide by all nuclear related agreements," he added.
Koizumi returned to Tokyo late Tuesday after a 12-hour visit to Pyongyang, where he held a summit meeting with top DPRK leader KimJong Il.
The two sides agreed to resume negotiations on the normalization of relations in October, which was stated in the Pyongyang Declaration issued at the end of the summit.
