Chung Mong-joon, head of the South Korea Football Association (KFA), officially declared his bid for the South Korean presidency in Seoul Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference in the National Assembly compound, Chung said, "I decided to run because I wanted to devotemyself to the political reform instead of just talking about it."

"I intend to stand at the center of a new era of politics basedon common sense. I will create a new party with many other politicians who agree with me, and the new party will be based on the voluntary participation by you, the Korean people," the national news agency Yonhap News quoted Chung as saying.

He also declared his intention to run a clean election campaign, saying that the essence of the "new politics" he intended to pursue is to convert the society into one based on common sense.

On the high level of support shown for his candidacy in recent opinion polls, Chung said it showed "how disappointed, frustrated and angry people are at the current political landscape."

Up to now, five persons have announced their presidential candidacy to the December election, besides Chung Mong-joon. They are Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Roh Moo-hyun, the biggest opposition Grand National Party's Lee Hoi-chang, famous former top business executive-turned waiter Seo Sang-rok as well as former prime minister Lee Han-dong, who just declared presidential candidacy on Monday.
