Senior CPC Official Meets Former US Secretary of State

Jia Qinglin, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with former US Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig,Jr. and his entourage Monday.

Jia Qinglin, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with former US Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig,Jr. and his entourage Monday.

Jia, who is also secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, exchanged views with Haig on Sino-US relations and Beijing's preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee andChinese president, will pay a visit to the United States shortly, Jia said, noting that the visit, scheduled in the heart of the autumn season, is expected to be fruitful.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has reiterated that the United States will abide by the one-China principle and by the guidelines of the three joint communiques between the two countries, Haig said, expressing his optimism about the prospects of US-China relations.

With regard to Beijing's preparatory work for the 2008 Olympic Games, Jia said the international bidding process will provide outstanding foreign firms with equal opportunities to participate.
