The flags of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) were raised in Busan Monday with the opening of the Main Media Center (MMC) of the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
The MMC covers 20,000 square meters in total area and can accommodate some 7,300 journalists, photographers and camera crewsfrom four domestic TV networks, 11 foreign TV networks and 197 news organizations from 20 countries and regions, said the South Korean news agency Yonhap News.
At the opening ceremony, held at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) Monday morning, the Busan Asian Games Organizing Committee (BAGOC) raised the flags of all the 44 participating countries and regions, including DPRK's, said Yonhap.
The DPRK's flags were also raised at the BAGOC headquarters and offices, and athletes' quarters, reported Yonhap.
This is the first time DPRK flags have been officially raised on South Korean territory since the division of the Korea Peninsula in 1945.
BAGOC officials explained that the government has approved the use of the DPRK national flags as dictated by international practice and the Charter of the Olympic Council of Asia.
Moreover, DPRK citizens visiting the event venues will be allowed to wave small DPRK flag inside the stadium, but South Korean citizens will be strictly banned from carrying the DPRK flag.
