China stands for a political settlement of the Iraqi issue and the UN Security Council should play an important role in this regard, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Saturday.
Tang made the statement as he was meeting with the secretary-general of the League of Arab States, Amre Moussa, on the margins of the general debate of the 57th General Assembly session.
China always maintains that the Iraqi issue should be resolved through political means on the basis of relevant Security Council resolutions, Tang said.
The Security Council should play an important role in the settlement of the Iraqi problem, and Iraq should implement the relevant council resolutions in a faithful and strict manner, he said.
It is China's set foreign policy to develop the friendly cooperative relations with the League of Arab States and broad members of the Arab world, he said.
China attaches great importance to the great role of the League of Arab States in regional and international affairs, he said, adding that China and the League of Arab States have cooperated closely and supported each other in international affairs.
Moussa said that his organization treasures its traditional friendship with China, and voiced his hope to strengthen consultation and cooperation between his group and China in international and regional affairs.
