US President George W. Bush said Saturday that the United Nations should "show some backbone" and confront the threat posed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein or Washington would "deal with the problem" alone.
"This is a chance for the United Nations to show some backbone and resolve, as we confront the true challenges of the 21st century, a chance for the United Nations to show its relevance," Bush told reporters after meeting with visiting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at his Camp David presidential retreat.
Bush said Hussein has broken every pledge he made to the United Nations since Iraq was defeated after invading Kuwait in 1990.
"Saddam Hussein has defied the United Nations 16 times -- not once, not twice," Bush said.
The president called on the United Nations to take the actions necessary as a peacekeeping organization to retain its status. "Make no mistake about it. If we have to deal with the problem, we'll deal with it," he added.
Berlusconi, a strong US ally in the war against terrorism, applauded Bush speech and said the world body "cannot continue to see its image undermined and its resolutions flaunted."
