Brazil Beats Hosts China at Women's Basketball Worlds
Brazil held back a late surge from China for a 85-73 victory Saturday in Taicang in their opening Group B play of the Women's World Basketball Championship, while South Korea routed Tunisia 124-70 in the group D.
Trailing by as many as 19 points in the first half, China pulled within 61-55 at the end of the third quarter with a 18-6 run.
However, Brazil stopped the Chinese surge from the start of the fourth and the hosts failed to get closer.
"China is a very good team but I think the players are short of international experience," said Brazil coach Carlos Barbosa. "However, I believe the team will have a bright future."
He also predicted that the Chinese women could make top eight at the Championship.
Barbosa's Chinese counterpart Gong Luming was satisfied with his players despite their inconsistent play.
"We lost the game because we did not play consistently," he said. "We had up and downs in the game,"
"However, I am still satisfied with my players."
Janeth Arcain led the Brazilians with 22 points and Alessandra Oliveira added 14. Arcain scored 16 points to help Brazil build a 46-29 lead after two quarters, but the 2000-2001 season WNBA MVP sat on the bench most of the second half with foul trouble.
Miao Lijie led the Chinese with 17 points. Chen Nan added 14 points and 8 rebounds.
China labored for a 8-7 lead early in the first quarter before more than 3,000 home fans. But Arcain and Oliveira had 10 points each as Brazil surged away with a 29-9 run connecting the first and second quarter for a 36-27 margin.
China was only 6-for-20 from the three-point line while Brazil make four three-pointers in seven tries.
In the South Korea-Tunisia clash, South Korean Kim Yeong-Ok scored the game-high 21 points.
